Brown ales are a favorite style of mine (Abita’s Turbodog being close to my heart), so I was pretty surprised that I hadn’t had this one before, so I picked it up for New Brew Thursday. I’m generally a fan of what Sierra Nevada does and this is no exception, unless you count the fact that I liked it better than any other of their offerings.

The beer had a nice rich, malty aroma and poured with a thick, fluffy white head. It’s dark brown in color, though slightly amber when in direct light. It had a silky, yet fizzy mouthfeel. The silkiness was about what you’d expect from this style. You can taste the maltiness in the front with some hints of chocolate.

The finish gave me some faint hints of the hops, and was slightly smokey. There was a very nutty element to the finish, too. The smokiness can be attributed to the fact that Sierra Nevada uses roasted malt straight out of the kiln when brewing.

All in all I’m a big fan of this one and wish that it wasn’t just a seasonal.
